Best Golf Courses in Raleigh

Ready to get your golf game up-to-par? With some of the most breathtaking courses in North Carolina, Raleigh and its surrounding area are a golfer’s paradise. From lush fairways that stretch for miles to incredible views from tee boxes, these top-notch locations make it easy for pros and newcomers alike to challenge themselves or take it slow. No matter what level you're playing at, step onto one of Raleigh's best greens and enjoy.

Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University

North Carolina State isn't just a university, the school also dominates the golfing world with their one-of-a-kind experience. The Lonnie Poole Golf Course is the only collegiate course in the world designed by Arnold Palmer. In the spirit of learning, Palmer collaborated with two alums to create a golf course accessible to players at any level. The clubhouse's Player Development Suite has all of today’s cutting-edge golfing technology, and the staff can help you refine and improve your swing and find the right gear.

The Lonnie Poole course is, of course, a venue for the university golf teams but also doubles for turfgrass and stormwater research associated with the agriculture courses at the college. It also serves as a teaching and training facility for the university’s Golf Management Program.

The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation

Experience a private golfing oasis just 20 minutes from downtown Raleigh. At the Country Club of Wakefield Plantation–part of McConnell Golf–you can tee off amidst stunning views and unparalleled terrain. Whatever your skill level may be, this members-only course is sure to provide an unforgettable experience.

With a design by golfer Hale Irwin, the 18-hole course at this club will challenge even experienced players with its fast and hilly terrain. There’s also 9-holes for beginners or intermediates looking for some practice time and a training center, where you can learn tips from expert instructors. During the summer, the club offers a juniors program that culminates into a parent-child (or grandparent-grandkid) tournament. This spot is a good place for a competitive experience.

Briar Creek Country Club

With its prime location between Raleigh and Durham, Briar Creek Country Club is a great spot for a community-driven golfing experience exclusive to its members. This country club has perks for golfers and non-golfers alike. Similar to Del Webb’s retirement communities, the club boasts lavish amenities like premier racquet, fitness, and swimming facilities and a fun and social mix of events, such as mahjong and bridge nights.

Of course, the golf course shouldn’t be overlooked. Opened in 2000, this course offers an invigorating round of golf amongst picturesque surroundings. The golf course is a test of patience and technique due to the quick turns and water features. It’ll even keep veteran players entertained. If you need some practice or are new to the sport, the club also has a practice range and one-on-one instruction so you can step up to those tees with confidence.

Beyond golfing, Raleigh has a little something for everyone and is an ideal place to retire. Wander downtown Fuquay-Varina and admire its charming historical buildings, or stroll River Walk in Clayton, where you can bike four miles alongside tranquil waters, then explore Del Webb active adult communities in Raleigh.
