Does retirement have Gen-Xers feeling a little grungy? Many went from mosh pits… to planning for pensions. A 2019 study by Del Webb reveals that, as they near the twilight of their lives, these music-loving folks are setting their sights on 55+ active adult communities. Here are some key findings about how Gen-X views retirement and what this group is focused on.

Gen-X Attitudes Toward Retirement

As the bridge between Baby Boomers and Millennials, more than 65 million Gen-Xers now move toward retirement, creating an impactful economic and demographic shift. Looking forward to retirement doesn't mean disliking your job, especially for Gen-Xers. An impressive 85 percent of 50-year-olds surveyed said that they like their current jobs. However, it seems many are thinking about stepping away from the office full-time and transitioning into a part-time gig or switching careers entirely.

For those heading into retirement but still wanting to keep a job, Del Webb designed communities near big cities and employment hubs. Plus, flexible floor plans mean it's easy to craft the perfect home office for continuing your career with ease. These homes are an ideal setup for semi-retirees seeking balance in this new stage of life.

A Move Toward Multi-Generational Living

Unlike their parents and grandparents, Gen-Xers aren't all dreaming of a small seaside retirement condo. Instead, when they look ahead to their future move, 65 percent are planning for something the same size or bigger than what they have now.

This group prioritizes togetherness and accommodating multiple generations. Almost three out of four respondents are looking for a single-family home with at least three bedrooms, so the whole family can live under the same roof. For nearly a decade, multi-generational living has been on the rise, and this survey seems like proof that it’s a trend that’s here to stay. Families are also seeking dual-master bedrooms, separate apartments, and in-law suites.

Homes should be able to adapt with us as we age, and flexible designs and floor plans make it possible for homeowners to stay in their own home, even while they get older. The open-concept floor plans remain popular because of the flexibility they provide; you can design rooms however you need to, for whatever life brings you. With an adjustable space that meets our changing needs, you can enjoy the comfort of your house even longer.

Health, Lifestyle, and Wellness for Your Active Retirement

The 2019 Del Webb survey also looked at how current residents feel about their homes and retirement, providing support for future Del Webb homeowners to feel confident about their retirement decisions. Current residents of the community shared how living at Del Webb has contributed to a healthier lifestyle and more positive outlook on life, two very important components for successful aging. An impressive 46 percent of residents reported being happier than they were 10 years ago.

Gen-Xers are proof that you don't have to slow down just because retirement is on the horizon. In fact, at Del Webb, more than four out of five people feel younger than their years, some respondents reported even feeling an incredible ten years younger than their current age. If you’re young at heart, sounds like all you may have to do is switch up your scenery and head to Del Webb.

Del Webb residents also take their health and fitness seriously. Thirty-five percent report being more active than before they lived in the community, with a majority working out several times each week. For Gen Xers looking for an energizing and invigorating place to live, these communities are an excellent fit.

The flexible floor plans, career-convenient living, and active adult lifestyle that you’re craving for your retirement is found at Del Webb. So don't wait: explore Del Webb retirement communities today to start living life your way!
